Wandsworth prison was the subject of an inquiry that uncovered major public failings in the prison's operation (overcrowding, mutilation, suicides), which also led to the resignation of warden Katie Price.

The prison guard named De Sousa Abreu was a mother in her thirties and of Portuguese origin.

After receiving information that she was attempting to leave the UK, the British authorities arrested her at London Heathrow airport. On Monday July 1, 2024, after being taken into custody, the Portuguese woman was brought before Uxbridge Magistrates' Court, on the outskirts of London.

At the end of the hearing held by Judge Julie Cooke, the defendant was charged as a public official. The defendant must pay bail and remain at home with an electronic bracelet, pending sentencing on July 29, 2024 at 10am at Isleworth Crown Court.

Ms. De Sousa Abreu is currently barred from leaving the UK, her passport having been confiscated by the British courts.
